How to write correctly the conclusions and recommendations?

Have you reached the end point of your degree work? Do you already have a document with all the chapters organized and developed, but you are missing one last part: the conclusions and recommendations?

You should know that although it does not seem, this is one of the most important chapters of your thesis, because that is where the final comments about the work are recorded, it is the closing that your reader expects to finish understanding your research. Also, here you can leave the suggestions that you consider necessary taking into account what you found during your investigative process.

For this reason, here are some tips that will help you formulate the conclusions and recommendations correctly.

I. The conclusions

The conclusions are a final reflection about the work previously done, constitutes the last part of the content of the thesis and represents the closing discourse of the same. Therefore, it must contain the necessary and sufficient elements to make clear the results obtained in the work, the procedure followed for its development, compliance or non-compliance with the objectives and in general, should leave clarity in the reader of the general characteristics of the research carried out.

Considering the above, to be written in the best way must meet four fundamental points, which are mentioned below:

  1. For each specific objective outlined in the work, there must be a conclusion with a minimum length of one paragraph, so that the reader can see if the objective was met and what results were achieved.
  2. There should be no information that has not been raised in the body of work, that is, it is not correct to write new topics at this point.
  3. It is necessary to write an introductory paragraph to start, in order that the reader is contextualized and later can enter the body of the conclusion.
  4. Manage a moderate extension; we recommend that it be between 1 and 4 pages in order that the researcher does not fall short when raising the final conclusions of his study, but that he does not get to write more than the account and make the process of reading and understanding of this section or worse, that it becomes another chapter.

II. The recommendations

The recommendations constitute an item that goes hand in hand with the conclusions of the investigation, in some cases, conclusions and recommendations are drafted without making any distinction one from the other.

This section of the thesis is that in which the researcher condenses those suggestions that originated during the process of carrying out the study and that were not included as part of the final text.

These suggestions have to do with various aspects related or not to the subject investigated. In order to make the recommendations of the thesis a point of interest and with academic validity, we suggest you write them taking into account the following classification.

Recommendations from the methodological point of view: these recommendations have to do with leaving open the possibility that in later studies the subject dealt with in your thesis will be addressed using different methodologies, be they more advanced or of the same level but with other instruments. Or, apply the methodology used in the study in research on other topics and even in other areas of knowledge.

Recommendations from the academic point of view: it is important that at the end of the study you leave an invitation to the university, faculty, academic program, colleagues and colleagues about the importance of continuing to research the topic worked on in your thesis, leaving for granted the reason why of that relevance.

In addition, depending on the research done, there may be recommendations for improvement in the academic field that need to be mentioned in the work.

Practical recommendations: in case your study is applied to any organization, economic sector, community, etc .; It is important to always include in the recommendations one or several proposals focused on that object or subject of study, either to correct some aspects, undertake improvements or include new elements of interest for the solution to the problem addressed.

In addition to the above, this point may have an approximate length of one page, so that each written paragraph is addressed to a specific actor. It is relevant not to extend, because it is an additional component of the thesis that should not say more than what is really necessary.

It should be noted that in some cases the three categories of recommendations mentioned are not included, but one of them, everything depends on the type of research carried out.
